When we can no longer manage submissions in a timely manner and proceed through the publication process for our authors, submissions will be temporarily suspended. Once our desks are clear enough, we will reopen the submission process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All manuscripts must meet our <a href=\"https:\/\/pogenonbooks.com\/content-guidelines\">content requirements<\/a> and use our <a href=\"https:\/\/pogenonbooks.com\/submission-form\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"572889\">submission form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Content Strictly Forbidden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All books selected for publication by Pogenon Books are completely human author creations. No AI content is allowed. All manuscripts are screened for AI creation and will be immediately rejected if flagged as being AI generated in any form and to any degree. When submitting a manuscript, authors are required to declare that their work contains no AI-generated content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We\u2019re Looking For:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a little more detail on our genre-focused interests:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Traditional high fantasy<\/strong>: these are books that are typically full of epic adventures\/quests, people and creatures that are not simply derivative, stereotypical elves, dwarves, wizards, and dragons. Those should probably be in your story, but be original! Be unexpected! But, above all, be real will fully-developed characters and conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Epic SciFi<\/strong>: these books need to be character-driven stories engaged in adventures and exploration, taking us to new and fresh worlds or living aboard unimagined ships or interacting with new species. Don\u2019t be too technical (don\u2019t lose the reader with too much scientific jargon). Technology can be surprising and innovative, but pages of theoretical physics, orbital dynamics, or explanations that are superfluous to the story will be frowned on. If you need to be technical, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Martian-Andy-Weir\/dp\/0553418025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Martian<\/a><\/em> by Andy Weir is a good example. Last of all, we do love a good time-travel story!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Literary fiction<\/strong>: you can\u2019t beat the classics! Books ranging from Russian novelists like Boris Pasternak to French masters like Victor Hugo helped shape the literary world. Many great British authors are among the elite, such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, G.K. Chesterton, George Eliot, and the Bront\u00eb sisters. We long to read great stories with characters that seem to breathe through the ink of the printed page! While many people (publishers and readers alike) tend to mourn the passing of past ages of great literature, there are books out there that still reach enviable literary heights: Kazuo Ishiguro\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Remains of the Day<\/em>, Muriel Barbery\u2019s <em>The Elegance of the Hedgehog<\/em>, Markus Zusak\u2019s <em>The Book Theif<\/em>, and Mark Haddon\u2019s <em>The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time<\/em> are thrilling, compelling reads! Please, if you are writing books that can compare with these greats, send them to us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Considerations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A compelling story should involve us in the journey. Characters need to feel alive, grab our attention and engage our emotions (sympathy or anger or both!). The conflict should be interesting, understandable (which may take some time) and not insurmountable without a cheap use of <em>deus ex machina<\/em>. Engage the mind, touch the heart with purpose and force, and make us live the story along with the characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We publish \u201cbooks\u201d only. What is a \u201cbook\u201d? Your manuscript needs to be novel-length (usually around at least 100,000 words) and stand-alone or lend itself to a series, though you need to make sure the book includes a satisfying resolution that doesn\u2019t leave the reader hanging but wanting more. We are not looking for short stories (or collections of short stories) at this time. Neither do we publish poetry, plays, any sort of graphic novel, or anything else that is not considered a novel-length book. We will make that determination, but you should be well aware of whether or not your manuscript fits this general description of a \u201cbook.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Other aspects we feel are crucial to a memorable novel:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Characters<\/strong> must be well-developed and feel alive. They are important to the overall plot, and they are necessary to the other characters. Some characters may appear briefly, but they are there for a reason. It may be a subtle reason, but they make the story more alive, more realistic, and they contribute to other characters\u2019 development and lifelike behaviors, attitudes, decisions, etc. Above all, they must be consistent, even when other characters and events impact them and introduce development and maturation (or, for that matter, failure or diminishment).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strong \u201cvoices\u201d<\/strong> in the 3rd or 1st person. This is essential for readers to connect with a character. If the main character has no distinct voice, the book has no direction. Make sure each character has a unique \u201cvoice,\u201d even if they are in agreement but especially if they argue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pacing<\/strong>. Move the story along. Don\u2019t put the reader to sleep, but don\u2019t rush through important details. At the end of every chapter, keep us wanting to keep going.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your world<\/strong> must feel real; it must feel long-established (even ancient, even in SciFi); and, it must have consistency in its physics (natural laws, etc.). A magical system is typical in fantasy, and even though it might be very innovative, it must have a consistency that by the end of the story, it can be seen as having been consistent all along.
